The Corps

The Gumball Corps consists of a devoted group of individuals committed to alleviating poverty through microfinance. Based in Stanford, our membership spans a diverse set of fun and ambitious characters.

J.S. - Executive Director
J.S. is pursuing an MS in Biological Sciences at Stanford University. He is also serving as co-chair of Cardinal Council, Stanford's student athlete advisory council and has previously held leadership positions at Stanford Scientific and the Unofficial Stanford Blog. He has enjoyed helping Gumball grow and is excited to take expand its reach and impact. J.S. earned a BS in Biological Science with interdisciplinary honors in 2008.
Bilal Mahmood - Operations Director
Bilal is a Biology/Economics student at Stanford University. Having studied in both the United States and Pakistan, he has developed a keen ambition in alleviating global poverty. He has served as the Editor-in-Chief of the Paly Voice, Event Coordinator for South Asian Tsunami relief efforts, and Team Director of a Biotech start-up focused on improving intracutaneous injections. In the future, he aims to apply his knowledge and experiences to driving Biotech ventures, particularly in his native land of Pakistan. Bilal is also an avid Muay Thai fighter, and loves cheese pizza.
Doreen Hoang - Campus Operations Director
Doreen manages the relationships with our partner schools and chapters. She assists in recruiting and consulting new schools on running the Gumball Challenge, while also drafting promotional and educational materials for the Challenge. Doreen is a senior majoring in Economics and is a semi-professional percussionist
L.H. - Finance Director
L.H. is sophomore majoring in Management Sciences and Engineering and is serving as Financial Manager at the Suites Eating Clubs. He manages all bank account-statements, financial reimbursements to employees, and overall budget analysis/projections. He is also responsible for distributing Gumball Challenge revenue in microloans through Kiva.org, and managing the organizationŐs Kiva account. He enjoys skiing and rock climbing
Belinda Chiang - Marketing Director
Belinda drives the overall advertising and PR campaigns for Gumball Capital, while drafting the monthly newsletter as well as managing the department as a whole. An active advocate for social entrepreneurship, she is currently a Sophomore majoring in Human Biology at Stanford University.
Travis Kiefer - Web Director
Travis is a sophomore at Stanford University considering a major in Psychology. Since coming to Stanford, he has engaged himself thoroughly with the Stanford entrepreneurship community and maintains a blog about his entrepreneurial experiences here in the valley. Travis is also passionate about issues in education, and feels strongly that technology (and his ninja coding skills) can be used extensively to solve the problems of today. When not fighting off IE6 browser bugs, he enjoys reading and hanging out with friends.
Kalvin Wang - Web Dev Officer
Kalvin cofounded Gumball Capital and served as its first Executive Director. He is a Computer Science major, class of 2008, who grew up in Silicon Valley watching the bubble grow and pop. With strong interests in social change, technology, and entrepreneurship, he enjoys chewing on scalable ventures like Kiva, DonorsChoose, and Gumball Capital. He has worked in the past for Hewlett-Packard and various Internet startups. He currently has 25,000 gumballs in his dorm room.
Salina Truong - Outreach Officer
Salina assists the Outreach department in maintaining corporate partnerships, general contact lists, and initial correspondence with potential affiliates. She is currently a Freshman at Stanford University.
Jae Won Joh - Marketing/Design Officer
Jae is responsible for the Design portion of the department: making flyers, videos, and general multimedia for distribution. He is also a published Biology major, class of 2009, with a strong interest in juxtaposing research and service. After attempting to found a pharmaceutical company in 2006, he learned much from having it tanked by IP woes, and hopes to further expand his horizons. He is a certified mediator, self-defense instructor, tutor, computer consultant, and immunology researcher. He's currently trying pick up his tenth language.
Ayo Roberts - Campus Operations Officer
Ayo is a Biomechanical Engineering major, class of 2008 from Rochester, Minnesota. Her career plans primarily involve the medical device and biotechnology industries, and she has done internships in research and industry. She is also interested in international development, particularly with regards to improving health care and supporting entrepreneurship. She enjoys reading, doing crafts, taking kickboxing classes, and baking.

Bruce Deming

Bruce Deming is a corporate partner in Covington & Burling's law office in San Francisco. Bruce has a broad-based corporate and securities transactional and advisory practice, with extensive experience in domestic and cross-border mergers and acquisitions, private equity and venture capital transactions, securities offerings and capital markets activities.Bruce is active in a number of professional and community-based organizations, including serving as Co-Chair of the Corporations Committee of the California State Bar; President of the board of Support for Families of Children with Disabilities; and as board member or advisory council for Lambda Legal Defense and Education Fund, the Peter M. Cicchino Social Justice Foundation and Our Family.

Ellen Kim
Ellen was formerly the Chief Executive Officer of Gumball Capital before she earned an MBA from Stanford Graduate School of Business in 2008. Before Stanford she worked for three years at Citigroup in the Public Finance Investment Banking Division and was an Associate in the department's Technology/Financial Structuring group. During that time she was responsible for modeling innovative debt structures for a variety of clients, including the Commonwealth of Massachusetts, the City of New York, and Catholic Healthcare West. At the GSB, Ellen was co-President of the Social Venture Club and was on the 2007-2008 Executive Team for the Public Management Initiative, ReelImpact. She has a BS in Economics from Massachusetts Institute of Technology
Sophia Tu
Sophia is a Science, Technology, and Society major, class of 2008 and has previously served as Gumball Captial's Outreach and Executive Director. She is interested in how information and communication technologies can be used to address unmet social needs and advocate for social justice, and has spent time working with an NGO in Ecuador on these issues. While in southern India, witnessing the transformative effect of microfinance on gender power dynamics reinforced her passion for microfinance. She co-chaired the 2007 Stanford Women's Leadership Conference and is conducting research on women entrepreneurs in the San Francisco Bay Area.
Jeff Seibert - Cofounder of Increo
Jeff is the cofounder of Increo, an idea management platform that enables individuals and teams across the company to share ideas, collaborate, and connect. Jeff has a BS in Computer Science from Stanford.

Alumni

Rishan Mohammad
Rishan is an associate at Parthenon Group, a management consulting firm, and the former Finance Director at Gumball Capital. He graduated from Stanford University in 2008 with a degree in Human Biology, where he conducted genetics research in a Stanford neurobiology lab. In 2007 he took a foray into politics, working both for the Speaker of the House in Washington D.C. and the Mayor in San Francisco. At Stanford he was an RA in an all-freshman dorm, a counselor at the Peer Counseling Center, a member of the Senior Class Cabinet, and the Director of International Fellowships for Stanford in Government, a non-partisan political organization. In his free time, he loves to play pool and guitar.
Wendi Chiong - Communications Director
Wendi is pursuing a Fulbright Fellowship in Latin America. She graduated from Stanford in 2008 with a degree in Political Science, and formerly served as Communications Director. She is very interested in issues of governance, economic development, and human rights, and currently works with the Stanford Association for International Development and the Center for Democracy, Development, and the Rule of Law at Stanford University. While studying abroad in Chile, Wendi interned with Acción Emprendedora, a microfinance institution that offers loans, business training, and social services to entrepreneurs in the rural areas outside of Santiago. Wendi has also worked with the Voting Section of the Department of Justice in Washington, DC, and the State Controller's Office in Sacramento, California.
Deanna Zhang
Deanna is an associate at Boston Consulting Group in the Indonesian Office and the former Campus Operations Director for Gumball Capital. She majored in Human Biology and International Relations at Stanford University. Her interests in international development, microfinance, and food security began in the summer of 2005, working as an HIV/AIDS instructor in rural villages of Tanzania. Since then, she has studied in Santiago, Chile, worked in an international public health firm in D.C., and served as a research fellow on a microfinance/anti-trafficking project at the United Nations in Bangkok. At Stanford, Deanna served as financial manager at Narnia House and on the Core Committee of Habla El D’a, an organization that tutors English to custodial workers on campus. A cappella, hip-hop dance, and photography provide some creative respite in her free time - though guitar and skydiving are definitely next are her to-do list.
Ilana Seid
Ilana is an investment banker at Lehman Brothers Real Estate division in Hong Kong and helped Gumball Capital get started in her senior year at Stanford University, where she graduated in 2007 with a degree in Economics. She is originally from Palau, a small island nation in the Pacific, and she was the sole recipient of the Palau National Full Scholarship for undergraduate education. At Stanford she was a member of the Alpha Phi Omega community service fraternity and Cap and Gown Women's Honor Society. Ilana was also a UN Youth Spokesperson for the Millennium Development Goals in 2006. Her work experience includes internships at the Permanent Mission of Palau to the United Nations and Lehman Brothers in Japan.
