Though Kiva's success stories span the hundreds of thousands of entrepreneurs they have helped, a truly inspiring anecdote comes from the account of New York Times reporter Nicholas D. Kristof. Kristof, not just satisfied with lending to any old NGO, decided to test out Kiva, and ended up lending to Abdul Satar Mohammad Rajab, a baker in Kabul, Afghanistan. To test Kiva's philosophy of transparency and reliability, he actually flew over to Kabul to meet his micro-loan recipient, and suffice to say, was astonished to find that Abdul Satar had actually opened a second bakery using the loan provided by Kristof. Repaying his interest-based loan in bread, Abdul Satar had set himself on a path towards, what he claims, will bring him six more bakeries.
