Familiar with Muhammad Yunus and the Grameen Bank, winners of the 2006 Nobel Peace Prize? Growing numbers of microlenders in developing nations also provide small loans to entrepreneurs, empowering them to lift themselves out of poverty. One nonprofit, Kiva, gives individuals in the United States the ability to make microloans directly to entrepreneurs. To further broaden the reach of microfinance, Gumball Capital collects money to lend through Kiva.
We believe microfinance is a great tool for alleviating poverty around the world. It's also the rare idea with broad appeal that hasn't yet gained traction on college campuses. So we're reaching out to students around the country through the Gumball Challenge to raise both funds and awareness for microfinance. We lend this capital to entrepreneurs through Kiva. Then, when they repay their loans, we lend it out again to new entrepreneurs. (We also pool donations from individuals who like Kiva's engaging model, but prefer to donate instead of lend.) It's truly a gift that keeps giving.
And did we mention the fresh gumballs? If you're in the area, come by and have a few on us.
